There must be some driver missing or something because I have tried with different programs to record, Nero, Windows, sonic and even changed the DVD, it is something with my pavillion dv and the windows home XP. If not, you will be getting an alarm that the driver cannot be found. If you look almost anywhere on the net you will find thousands no millions of people complaining that they are losing their DVD drivers from all manufacturers and models. There were 20 occurrences in the System Event Log of a message: Uninstall the driver then reinstall. Actually, to resolve this issue, I wound up calling HP tech support, instead of downloading the driver. You have nothing to loose in doing this.

I just wanted to say that the regedit process worked for me as well! My DVD showed up in Safe mode but had trouble in a regular boot up.
The firmware doesn’t work it is a conflict between windows and the driver or DVD. As a bonus, receive monthly emails with exclusive dh. I deleted it and back in business! First I thought the DVDs were hl-dt-wt and I used to throw them away and now I realized some don’t damage and work perfectly. Go to System Admin tools and select the recording unit and uninstall it. Tech support walked me through the process.
